The Invisible Paintbrush

By Rachel Lloyd · November 17, 2025

Mara found the paintbrush in the bottom drawer of the art room, wrapped in a note that said, “Use gently.”

It looked perfectly ordinary—until she dipped it into the air.

A bright red streak appeared on the wall out of nowhere. Mara gasped. Whatever she imagined flowed from the invisible bristles: a small bird, a bowl of strawberries, even a tiny bicycle. Each one shimmered, solid as anything—then vanished exactly one hour later.

At first it was fun. She painted herself a pizza during lunch break. She painted a puppy that licked her hand before fading like mist.

But when her friend Leo twisted his ankle, Mara panicked and painted a floating chair to carry him to the nurse. It worked—until it blinked out while they were halfway down the hall, dropping him gently onto the carpet.

Mara returned the brush to the drawer that afternoon. She added her own note: “Amazing, but unpredictable. Use only if you can catch someone when it disappears.”

When she walked away, the brush wiggled as if agreeing—or maybe waiting for the next artist brave enough to try it.
